Baby Gotta Pack

It’s past nine o’clock in the evening, and I find myself packing for my departure tomorrow morning. “Morning,” however, is a generous term for the 3:00 a.m. start I’ll be getting. Yes, that’s right.

Three. O’clock. In the morning.

That’s fewer than six hours from now.

A group of Whitman College students and I are going on a spring break service trip organized by the community service office, and our absurdly early flight out tomorrow (basically today) will take us to Detroit, Michigan. I meant to fill this post with pithy observations on the nature of service and maybe throw in that favorite buzzword “voluntourism,” but I have to be awake and responsible in a mere five and a half hours. Therefore, here are some shots of my tired and cranky efforts to pack and my desperate attempt to—for the love of all that is good in this world—remember to bring my toothpaste.

Correction: In a previous iteration of this post, I incorrectly stated that 3:00 a.m. was fewer than five hours away. In fact, it turns out that between 9:00 p.m. on Friday and 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, there are six hours. Who knew? Not this math major.
